Lets try this again......

15 years of controllers

Your photo with controller evolution is really nice.

My DJ story with digital controller is only 12 months old. Really.

I have taken a long break (family+business) until 2024.
From 1977 to 1990 I was a Vinyl-DJ with self-made analog equipment:

I like the 3 turntable setup

Tell us more about the self made equipment! That's awesome.

Not everything was constructed selfmade. For example turntables from Dual, ampflifiers from Yamaha, speakers from Gauss or Electrovoice and PAR bulbs were purchased.

But flightcases, light stands, loudspeakers enclosures, speaker crossovers, vinyl cases, power electrics and mirror balls we made on our own. The mixing console was an electronics kit that we had to solder together ourselves. The same for some light electronics. At the beginning we also placed light bulbs into the mirrored picture tube of old television sets. After opening the tubes on the rear side, letting the vacuum "go out" and washing them out.

We did not have much money. Due to this, everything was also very heavy, because we used cheaper chipboard instead of expensive lightweight blockboard or multiplex wood.

In event locations the dance floor was often made of wood. And vibrating too much for the turntables. So we placed heavy concrete weights under the turntables and suspended them free-floating from the ceiling with long ropes.

Your journey sounds similar to mine. I think in those days it was quite common.

I made a DJ console for my woodwork exam at school, bought two 7" platter chassis turntables and used a mono mixer "front panel" PCB bought from an advert in the back of an electronics magazine, where all the connections had to be hand soldered.

I also made the speakers and light boxes myself with drivers from Tandy and lamps from Woolworths.
